The blast occurred around 1 a.m. and it was so powerful that the windows of the neighbouring buildings were shattered and residents fled into the streets. The Karachi police chief has described it as an act of terrorism. Reports from Karachi said that Al-Qaeda slogans were found on the shattered walls of the Consul building. While one of the dead persons has been identified as the watchman of the Consul, there is no clue yet about the other two victims. Both are believed to be Pakistanis and one of them is a woman. The building was initially believed to be empty at the time of the blast, and police could not immediately explain why the woman was there in the building. It is after a gap of over three months that Karachi is in the news on account of the blast and the gory death of three persons from inside a diplomatic building. The last incident, which shook the city, was the death in similar fashion of several workers of a Christian non-government organisation in September. There have been several incidents of terrorism involving western and Christian targets in Karachi during the current year. These included the kidnap and subsequent murder of the Wall Street Journal
