Sahmat to showcase 10 years of resistance

NEW DELHI DEC. 5. This year being the 10th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid, SAHMAT has decided to mark the occasion with a series of events that together seek to map 10 years of resistance across the country to the right-wing Hindutva forces.

Christened `Ayodhya to Gujarat: Ways of Resisting', the month-long programme that began on Wednesday will be confined to Delhi owing to logistical reasons. However, according to Ram Rehman of SAHMAT, efforts will be made to reach out to a wide cross-section of society by organising the events at different venues across the Capital. According to the eminent historian K. N. Panikkar, the very nature of Indian politics has changed over the past decade with the Hindutva forces capturing the political centrestage. "Since introspection is crucial to any resistance, this programme is aimed at finding out whether Indian society is capable of putting up such a resistance.''

While stating that resistance to Hindutva had grown over the years, Prof. Panikkar said the corresponding growth of communal forces had been faster.
