SP members injured in lathicharge

BANDA DEC. 5. The Samajwadi Party today claimed that five of its legislators were injured in police lathicharge outside the district prison here where they had gone to meet the jailed independent MLA Raja Bhaiya, who had spearheaded a revolt against the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati.

The SP activists staged a dharna in front of the prison protesting the incident. However, police declined to confirm the lathicharge. The SP State general-secretary, Shivpal Singh Yadav, who led the party legislators, said they were denied permission to meet Mr. Raja Bhaiya and when they tried to stage a sit-in,, police resorted to lathi charge.
