Three farmers end lives

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD DEC. 5. Three farmers have committed suicide in the State — one in Anantapur and two in Karimnagar districts— during the last 24 hours due to mounting debts following failure of their crops.

According to an Anantapur report, Vadde Venkatesh (40) of Narayanapuram in Kudair mandal consumed a pesticide last night to end his life. As per the statement given by the wife of the deceased to the police, the farmer had two acres of land and had been facing groundnut crop failure for the last four years and cultivating with loans.

The burden of debts on him has piled up as he had to borrow money for cultivation and for the family needs.

In Karimnagar two cotton farmers ended their lives on Wednesday. G. Rajanarsu (50) of Yellampalli village in Ramagundam had cultivated cotton in five acres of land and paddy in two acres.

Due to drought the cotton crop had failed. Unable to clear debts, the farmer went to his fields and consumed a pesticide.

R. Lakshmaiah of the Lakshmipur village of Bejjanki mandal had cultivated cotton in two acres of his land and there was no yield. He went to his fields and consumed pesticides and collapsed.
