Inaugurating the blockade of the MC Road before the KSRTC bus station, the CPI(M) district secretary, K. Ananthagopan, alleged that the new traffic system were totally unscientific and it had cost the common man dearly. Mr Ananthagopan alleged that the general public had been forced to spend more money on travel and fuel as they have to drive an extra kilometre to reach the heart of the town because of the "Thughlaqian'' one-way traffic system in the town. The KSRTC too had to spend more on fuel as the new one-way system makes the buses circumambulate the the town via the municipal stadium to proceed towards Chengannur and Kozhencherry. Moreover, vehicles coming from the Kozhencherry side have to travel an extra distance to reach the KSRTC bus stand via the Head Post Office beyond Cross Junction, the CPI(M) leader alleged. He alleged that the new system had been introduced without conducting any survey or study on the number of vehicles passing through the town or the carrying capacity of the roads in the town limits. He warned of a strong agitation if the authorities failed to review the "anti-people'' traffic regulations. The CPI(M) taluk secretary, K.A. Joseph, the DYFI district secretary, R. Sanalkumar, and K. Prakash Babu also spoke.
Traders' protest
Meanwhile, the Merchants Association in the town affiliated to the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy has come down heavily on the new traffic regulations. Addressing a press conference in Thriuvalla today, the association president, M. Salim, alleged that the unscientific traffic regulations had badly affected business at almost all shops and other establishments in the town as it restricted the entry of delivery vans and other vehicles along many stretches in the town. Mr Salim opined that a divider between the Deepa junction and the SCS junction would have been a better alternative to ease the traffic congestion on the MC Road than the new one-way system. He has also demanded the authorities to clarify their stand on the hasty introduction of the new traffic system in the town with out even consulting the Merchants Association and other civic bodies in the Thiruvalla. He also urged the authorities to take immediate steps to develop and maintain the roads leading to Thiruvalla town from the suburbs with a view to ease the traffic congestion in the town. What was badly needed wais the speedy implementation of the proposed Thiruvalla byepass but unfortunately the authorities and as well as the people's representatives appeared to have taken no sincere efforts to that effect, alleged Mr Salim. He said that the traders in the town would meet on Saturday to decide the future course of action if the authorities failed to review the new traffic regulations.
