Officials asked to inform ryots about water supply

By Our Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry Dec. 5. The District Collector, K.S. Jawahar Reddy, on Thursday, instructed officials of Irrigation, Revenue and Agriculture to give the correct picture about supply of water to rabi crop by explaining ground realities and see that there was no apprehensions or dissatisfaction among ayacutdars. He was addressing a meeting of senior officials of above departments and giving instructions about the steps to be taken to ensure water to the approved ayacut of about 2.50 lakh acres under the Dowleswaram Barrage. The SP, Govinda Singh, was also present.

The Collector directed officials to see that no seedbeds were grown in areas other than the notified ayacut. Under no circumstances, transplantation should be allowed in the non-notified areas, he said. Monitoring water supply during the ensuing rabi season was very crucial. Mandal-level committees formed for monitoring water supply should be vigilant, he said.

Dr. Reddy pointed out that water shortage this year was most severe in the last 18 years and the water storage in Godavari as on today was a mere 6,900 cusecs as against about 18,000 cusecs on the same day last year. He said that transplantation would commence from December 15 and pick up by 20. All details like the ayacut area, the date and time of water supply should be informed to the ayacutdars well in advance.

Use of motors, cross-bunding and breaching of canals to divert water should be prevented at all costs. He warned people resorting to such acts of severe action. A special cell was set up at the district head quarters and MROs should give all information to this centre promptly. Pamphlets giving full details should distributed in all villages.
