FKLOA threatens indefinite stir

BANGALORE Dec. 5. The Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Associations (FKLOA) has warned that it will stop operating all commercial goods transport vehicles for an indefinite period from January 1 if the Government fails to withdraw its decision to ban vehicles 15 years old or more from plying in some parts of the State.

The FKLOA president, B. Chenna Reddy, told presspersons here today that following the submission of a memorandum, the Government held a discussion with representatives of the FKLOA in July on the issue of imposing a ban on 15-year-old vehicles in Bangalore city. It had given an assurance that it would take a final decision only after having another discussion with the federation. But the Government unilaterally directed the Transport Commissioner to enforce the ban from January 1, 2003 in Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Dharwad, and Gulbarga.

The FKLOA, in its memorandum, had highlighted some points such as the vested interest of vehicle manufacturers. Pollution was caused by poor maintenance of vehicles and did not depend on their age, it said..
