South Africa clinches series

Kimberley Dec. 5. South Africa beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the fourth one-day international here today to clinch the series 3-1. Herschelle Gibbs (108 n.o.) and Jacques Kallis (64 n.o.) were the architects of South Africa's win. They put on a record unfinished partnership of 172 for the third wicket to guide their team to victory with 19.1 overs to spare.

Earlier Sri Lanka was bundled out for 184 in the 48th over. It was a stunning display of fielding by the home team, with Neil McKenzie taking a brilliant leaping one-handed catch to dismiss the dangerous Jayasuriya for 27 off the bowling of Allan Donald.

But it was an unlikely run-out which started the rot for the visitor after they had set off at a rollicking pace thanks to some superb batting by Atapattu on the De Beer's Diamond Oval pitch.

The elegant opening batsman had stroked 39 delightful runs when he took what should have been an easy two off a glance to fine leg.

The throw-in from Ntini was routine, but a sneaky backhand onto the stumps from Boucher caught Atapattu in mid-air in his crease, but with nothing grounded. Wickets fell at regular intervals after that.
