Pradeep stops Sharad's winning run

By Raghunandan Gokhale

THANE DEC. 5. IM Sriram Jha (LIC), IM Ravi Hegde(Union Bank)and TN youngster R.R. Laxman joined overnight leader Sharad Tilak (Union Bank) at the top on six points with resounding victories in the seventh round of Rochess International rating chess tournament being played here at Sahyog Mandir.

Earlier, young Pradeep Ghosh played well to stop leader Sharad's winning run in the sixth round. Top-seeded IM Roktim Bandopadhyay (West Bengal) was also held to a draw by Saurabh Kherdekar (Railways).

The game between IMs Sharma and Tilak was fought in the King's Indian Defence where Dinesh Sharma played a quiet system and was not happily placed when Sharad, as usual short of time, offered him a draw.

Sriram Jha outwitted young C.J. Arvind (TN) after a sharp tactical battle but the game that attracted the most spectators was the one between Sivanand and Sudhakar Babu (Indian Bank). Sivanand sacrificed a piece against the former National `B' Champion and had a dangerous passer on the sixth rank. Babu tried all tricks in the book to use his extra piece, but had to share the point in the end.

R.R. Laxman, who tied for the first place last year here, put an end to the aspirations of National `B' Champion Suvrajit Saha from the Black side irregular Queen pawn game. In fact, the former National `B' Champions had a bad day today.

The Maharashtra duo of former National `B' Champions, FM Avinash Awate and IM Arun Vaidya were stunned by fourteen-year-old schoolboys. National under-14 runner-up Ninad Puranik accounted for Awate while Vaidya lost to Mumbai schoolboy Rahul Ved in Queen pawn game.

Nine-year old Aditya Udeshi is leading the young brigade of rating aspirants and many of the teenagers are hoping to get their names in the FIDE rating list next year on the basis of their good performances here.
