Bengal claims two titles

SIRSA DEC. 5. Bengal could manage to win just two crowns as Maharashtra's sub-junior boys and Haryana's cadet girls snatched away two other titles in the team events of the National sub-junior table tennis championship here on Thursday.

Even as Bengal expectedly claimed the cadet boys and sub-junior girls titles, Maharashtra `A' capped a splendid run in the sub-junior boys section. Maharashtra defeated Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Academy 3-2 in the semifinal before taking care of Bengal.

The bigger surprise of the day was the 3-2 triumph of host Haryana over firm favourite Bengal. Much to the delight of the crowd, Suman pulled off both her singles before Rashu won the deciding match.

The results (Team championships):

Cadet boys (final): Bengal bt Tamil Nadu 3-1 (S. Kar bt E. Prabhakaran 11-9, 6-11, 11-4, 11-9; S. Das lost to G. Sathivan 7-11, 6-11, 6-11; P. Bose bt Nitin Thiruvernaged 11-5, 11-5, 11-9; S. Das bt E. Prabhakaran 11-5, 12-10, 11-5.

Cadet girls (final): Haryana bt Bengal 3-2 (Suman bt M. Mukherjee 11-6, 11-9, 11-8; Rashu lost to S. Ghosh 11-6, 6-11, 8-11, 6-11; Neha lost to G. Nag 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 6-11; Suman bt S. Ghosh 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 14-12; Rashu bt M. Mukherjee 11-4, 11-7, 11-5).

Sub-junior boys (final): Maharashtra `A' bt Bengal 3-1 (Mariand Biniwale bt S. P. Roy 15-13, 9-11, 14-12, 11-6; Sanil Shetty bt T. Sinha 11-7, 11-8, 11-7; Nachiket Galawde lost to K. Mondal 8-11, 9-11, 8-11; Sanil Shetty bt S. P. Roy 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6).

Sub-junior girls (final): Bengal bt Tamil Nadu 3-0 (S. Mondal bt A. V. Nivedita 11-7, 12-10, 12-10; P. Kundu bt U. V. Agni 11-4, 11-6, 11-9; S. Praveen bt Swetha Kumar 11-7, 11-2, 11-6). _ Our Special Correspondent
