Hospital staff facing suspension for corruption

By Our Staff Reporter

Chennai Dec. 4. Following protests by a group of patients today alleging bribery and corruption at the Hospital for Women and Children, Egmore, the Government has decided to suspend 15 staff members and start a 24-hour complaint cell at the hospital.

A number of patients and visitors staged a demonstration on the premises of the hospital alleging that they were being harassed by ward boys, attendants and ayahs and charged hefty amounts for just taking a look at the newborn. The rate for boy babies was Rs. 500, while for girls, it was Rs. 200, the visitors complained.

A formal complaint was filed with Health department officials.

Acting on the complaint, the Director of Medical Education, C. Ravindranath, said orders would be issued to suspend 15 staff members for collecting bribes.

In addition, a complaint cell would be started under the supervision of a doctor, where patients could register the complaints and seek redressal. "We have received several complaints about this hospital, but this is the first time there has been a demonstration of this nature. We will ensure that patients are not harassed," Dr. Ravindranath said.
