Bhuj MPs want separate cell to oversee relief
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, FEB. 3 . Two members of Parliament from Bhuj district
of Gujarat have met the Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, and
demanded a separate Authority or Department for overseeing
rehabilitation and development works in the earthquake ravaged
district. They are reported to have criticised the State
Government's handling of the rescue and relief measurers in the
region.
The Lok Sabha MP from Bhuj, Mr. P.S. Gadhavi, and the Rajya Sabha
member, Mr. Anantray D. Dave, appealed for a separate Authority
to coordinate the efforts of the Government and NGOs for
providing land for the homeless and provision of infrastructure
facilities such as water, electricity, roads and houses.
The Prime Minister is said to have assured the MPs that the
Minister for Urban Development, Mr. Jagmohan, would visit Kutch
district and assess the developmental programme there.
The MPs met various Ministers to press home the need for a
concerted development effort to mitigate the sufferings of
affected people. They met the Minister of State for Civil
Aviation, Mr. Chamanlal Gupta, and sought a daily flight from
Delhi to Ahmedabad.
