Roy, Rushdie voted favourites

By Hasan Suroor

LONDON MAY 17. Salman Rushdie's ``Midnight's Children'' and Arundhati Roy's ``The God of Small Things'' have been voted as among Britain's 100 most favourite novels in a BBC nationwide poll that saw ``popular'' writers such as J.K. Rowling and Jeffrey Archer lead the way, while some of the best known names in English literature such as V.S. Naipaul and Graham Greene failed to make it.

The poll, in which about 140,000 persons took part, is part of BBC Two's ``Big Read'' project, which would culminate in autumn when the list would be pared down to 20.

The BBC emphasised that the selection represented the people's favourite books and not necessarily the ``best'' in literary terms.
