The service connects 10 other major cities in the country with Bangalore. Speaking at a function organised to mark World Telecommunications Day organised by the BSNL on the theme "Helping all of the world's people to communicate", Mr. Padmanabhan said 30 base stations would be set up by the end of June. Sub-stations would be set up in various parts of the State, including Hubli, Bellary, Belgaum, and Mangalore, shortly. Nearly 2.5 lakh "CellOne" SIM cards had been sold in the State, Mr. Padmanabhan added. S. Sadagopan, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, said the Telecom Department was providing the best services but they should concentrate on better marketing and sales of the BSNL products. Telecommunications was the backbone of Information Technology, he added. Awards for excellence in the field of telecommunications were presented on the occasion. The Bharat Sanchar Shree Karnataka State-level Award was presented to U.P. Ramakrishna, lorry driver; G.N. Hegde, Sr. TOA (P), Karwar TD; Prakash R. Basarimarad, Sr. TOA (T), Belgaum TD; G.S. Arun Kumar, TTA, Bangalore TD; G. Jayalakshmi, SS, Bangalore TD; Anil Kumar Pujar, draughtsman, Hubli TD. The Vishist Sanchar Seva Padak (Karnataka) was presented to A.L. Kalavathi, JTO, Bangalore TD; B.M. Patil, SDE, Belgaum TD; and K.L.Jairam, DGM, Mysore TD. The Sanchar Seva Padak was given to R. Vasumathi, AAO, Circle; and Sreepad Manjayya Hegde, Sr. AO, Circle office. The Bharat Sanchar Sarathi Award (Circle office) was presented to Syed Imtiaz Razvi, SS (O), staff section, Circle office; and the Bharat Sanchar Sarathy Award (Bangalore Telecom District) was given to Bhupathy T.M.; Vivekananda Ramakrishna Naik, Sr. TOA (P); and Kokila Srinivas, T.M. The Sanchar Seva Padak (Bangalore Telecom District) was given to K.B.Ganesh Babu, SDE; and D.S.Krishna Murthy, DE. The Uttara Kannada Telecom District, which has its office in Karwar, bagged the Best Telecom District in the State Award.
