Nala desilting work to be privatised

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD May 17. The MCH has decided to entrust nala desilting work to contractors on a round the year basis for continuous maintenance of drains. This is expected to result in effective monitoring, as the agency doing the work would be made responsible. It would also be asked to attend to all kinds of complaints, including monsoon emergency complaints.

This new procedure has been evolved, as the present pre-monsoon desilting of major nalas is found insufficient. Desilting on a continuous basis is necessary in view of enormous dumping of garbage and other waste material into the storm water drains.

Under the new procedure works would be allotted by floating tenders. The agencies should possess mobile phone for easy accessibility. Desilting is to be done thoroughly up to bed level at the first instant from April to May and preventive desilting to bed level twice in September-October and December-January. The first phase of desilting is to be completed by May 31.

Contractors would be collecting complaints from ward offices and attending to them within 24 hours. Otherwise they would be penalised. They would also be required to attend any emergencies like floods, water logging an inundation. Further, the contractors are to dump the silt on their own in low lying areas identified by executive engineers. Payment would be made on monthly basis as a percentage payment of the total amount without any recording of measurements.

For convenience sake the MCH has divided the works into 11 packages of major SW drains and 31 minor SW drains costing Rs. 555 lakhs.
