Vayalar Ravi flays TDP support to NDA

By Our Staff Reporter

Rajahmundry May 17. The AICC general secretary, Vayalar Ravi, on Saturday charged the Sangh Parivar with following a single point agenda of anti-minorityism which would have disastrous consequences for the country. This agenda was being abetted by the BJP, jeopardising the national interest. By extending support to the NDA Government headed by the BJP, the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, was contributing to this process, Mr. Ravi pointed out, hoping that Mr. Chandrababu Naidu would understand this.

Speaking to newsmen here, Mr. Ravi, who was here to participate in the padayatra of the CLP leader,Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, asserted that the Congress agenda was development-centred. He was glad that the padayatra of Dr. Rajasekahara Reddy, which had the approval of the AICC and evoked tremendous response from the public, had spurred a debate on developmental issues. But it was unfortunate that TDP Ministers and other leaders of the party, instead of responding positively to the issues raised by Dr. Reddy, were ridiculing it. The focus had now come on to the issue of development and this was a positive development of Dr. Reddy's padayatra, Mr. Ravi said.

On the possibility of free power supply which Dr. Reddy has been promising in all his meetings during the padayatra, Mr. Ravi said, "It (free power supply) is feasible.'' Why then the Congress, a national party, had been applying different yardsticks in different States in respect of free power supply. Answering this question, Mr. Ravi said no two States had similar situations. "We advocate free power supply to certain categories keeping in view the situation in that particular State,'' Mr. Ravi said, pointing out that free power supply was being given to certain categories in Kerala.

He said that reforms in the power sector in Andhra Pradesh had brought misery to farmers.

On the demand, by some Congress MLAs and leaders for a separate State and PCC in Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Ravi pointed that the AICC president Sonia Gandhi, wrote to the Prime Minister, A.B. Vajpayee, requesting for constitution of a SRC (State Reorganisation Committee). The Congress had also constituted a committee with senior leader, Pranab Mukherjee, as the chairman, on this issue. A decision would be taken after studying all aspects.
