Delhi, Maharashtra top FDI list

NEW DELHI MAY 17. Official data on the investor-friendly stance of the States has revealed that Delhi received the maximum amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) during the 2001 calendar year and also maintained a high position in 2002.

According to official figures, Delhi topped the list of the States receiving FDI in 2001 by attracting an inflow of Rs. 6,918 crores out of the total inflow of Rs. 15,841 crores received by all the States collectively. Maharashtra followed Delhi with an inflow of Rs. 2,991 crores while Karnataka received investments worth Rs. 1,310 crores.

Tamil Nadu received investments of about Rs. 742 crores and Andhra Pradesh Rs. 339 crores. The small Union Territory of Pondicherry received Rs. 299 crores worth of investments, followed by Gujarat which received Rs. 109 crores as FDI. Other States, not indicated individually in the official list collectively received Rs. 2,962 crores as FDI.

In 2002, Maharashtra topped the list with investments worth Rs. 4,865 crores while Delhi got Rs. 2,994 crores as FDI. Tamil Nadu improved its position in 2002 with investments worth Rs. 1,341 crores while Karnataka got Rs. 892 crores. Andhra Pradesh got Rs. 288.81 crores as FDI and Gujarat Rs. 288.42 crores but Pondicherry received no foreign direct investment last year. The other States not individually named received Rs. 4,259 crores as FDI and the country as a whole received Rs. 16,123 crores as FDI during 2002 calendar year.

The amounts of FDI inflow include those received through the Secretariat of Industrial Approvals, the Foreign Investment Promotion Board, through acquisition of existing shares and Reserve Bank's automatic route.
