`A last-ditch attempt to unite JD'

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE MAY 17. The former Chief Minister and Janata Dal leader, Ramakrishna Hegde, said today that the industrialist and MP, Vijaya Mallya, had told him that he would make a last attempt to bring leaders together to make the Janata Dal a strong and united Opposition party.

``Mr. Mallya has my support and blessings,'' Mr. Hegde said in a fax message sent from Cromwell Hospital in London, where he has been undergoing treatment for the past few weeks.

However, Mr. Hegde made it clear to Mr. Mallya that he would not accept any position in the new set-up of the party. Mr. Mallya approached the former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, and Opposition party leaders.

Mr. Hegde hoped that leaders such as S.R. Bommai, C. Byre Gowda, M.P. Prakash, Ramesh Jigajinagi, B. Somashekar, and others would agree to cooperate.

"I am very unhappy over the developments in my party,'' Mr. Hegde said.
