Apologise to seer, Deve Gowda told

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE MAY 17. The leaders of the State unit of the BJP today demanded a public apology from the former Prime Minister and MP, H.D. Deve Gowda, for his recent comments against Sri Balagangadharanath Swamiji of Adichunchanagiri Math.

Addressing the party workers who staged a protest in front of the Kempe Gowda statue here, the BJP MLA, K.N. Subba Reddy, said Mr. Deve Gowda won the bitterly fought Lok Sabha byelections from Kanakapura with the blessings and support of the swamiji. Mr. Reddy said loyalty and faith in a math was an individual matter, and no political leader could interfere in it. The Adichunchanagiri Math was running a number of educational institutions and contributing in many ways for the welfare of the Vokkaligas, he added. Mr. Deve Gowda was trying to undermine the influence of Balangadharanath Swamiji and promote a parallel math, S.K. Nataraj, member, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council, alleged, and said that in the name of "Guruvandana'', he was dividing the community and curbing the growth of new generation of leaders.

In a press release, the BJP MLAs, Ramachandra Gowda and Katta Subramanya Naidu, alleged that Mr. Gowda had indulged in dirty politics of the "panchayat-level" kind. He was an expert in not only breaking political parties but also his own family and the community, they charged.
