Osama in partnership with Iraq: Powell

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington, FEB. 11. The United States Secretary of State, Colin Powell, has told a Senate Panel that a forthcoming statement of Osama bin Laden will show the world why it needs to be concerned about Iraq's connections with terrorism.

Gen. Powell told the Senate Budget Committee that he had read a transcript of "what bin Laden or who we believe to be bin Laden'' will be saying on the Al Jazeera television network later on Tuesday.''... once again he speaks to the people of Iraq and talks about their struggle and how he is in partnership with Iraq,'' the Secretary of State said.

But the Chief Editor of Al Jazeera has told The Associated Press that the television network was not in possession of any such tape of bin Laden. Gen Powell came to the Senate for the second time since he gave his crucial presentation to the United Nations Security Council last week, where he detailed in some specificity about Iraq's weapons and programmes of mass destruction.
