Airport: hurdles to be cleared by March 15

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE Feb. 11. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has promised that the hurdles in the path of the proposed Bangalore International Airport will be removed by March 15, according to the Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna.

Mr. Krishna said here on Tuesday that Mr. Vajpayee made this promise in New Delhi on Monday when he was there to attend the meeting of the Cauvery River Authority.

Addressing "Connect II" organised by the Tourism Department to promote tourism in the State, Mr. Krishna said that with this assurance, the Government's ambitious project would become a reality.

Mr. Krishna thanked Mr. Vajpayee and said that the project had been facing some problems in the past two years despite his efforts to convince the Union Government on the need for an international airport for Bangalore.

Mr. Krishna said he had apprised the Prime Minister of the need for private participation in building airports in the country. There was a need to bring in amendments to the Airports Authority of India Act for the purpose.
