Defeat communal forces in Sattankulam: CPI

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI FEB. 11. The CPI has appealed to "secular" forces to support the Congress for defeating AIADMK-led "communal forces" in the Sattankulam byelection.

The BJP support to the AIADMK in all its " undemocratic" activities in the Assembly shows that the "communal forces" in the State are rallying round the ruling party, said the CPI State executive. "To frustrate the evil designs of the AIADMK it was imperative for all secular forces to sink their differences and defeat the party".

The meeting urged the Government to implement the food-for-work programme in all drought-affected districts, besides ensuring 30 kg of rice to each of the families of small and marginal farmers who were "seriously hit".

The State secretary, R. Nallakannu, presided.

'Bypoll a referendum on AIADMK Govt.'

Our Salem Special

Correspondent reports:

The former TNCC president, M.P. Subramaniam, has said the outcome of the byelection should be deemed a referendum on the AIADMK Government.

Addressing a press conference in Salem today, Mr. Subramaniam said that in the bypoll, all Opposition parties were arrayed against the AIADMK. As such, the Congress was the symbol of opposition in the constituency. The DMK, the PMK and the MDMK had not openly declared their support to the Congress candidate as they were still part of the National Democratic Alliance. As almost all sections of the society were affected in one way or other by the present dispensation, they would express their opinion through exercising the franchise. If the poll was held in a fair and free manner, the Congress candidate would romp home, he said.

Referring to the case filed against the TNCC working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, for the alleged derogatory speech made by him against Ms. Jayalalithaa at Uthamapalayam in Theni district in October last during electioneering, Mr. Subramaniam said ``it is not surprising as the police department happens to be the pet department of Ms. Jayalalithaa, which she is pampering the most.''
