Call to lift curbs on Zimbabwe

LAGOS Feb. 11. Nigeria is calling for the lifting of Commonwealth sanctions on Zimbabwe and its readmission to the organisation, and has the support of South Africa, a senior Nigerian official said today.

He said the Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, had made the call in a letter he was sending to the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, head of a special committee on Zimbabwe set up by the Commonwealth, a 54-nation grouping of mainly former British colonies.

Mr. Obasanjo had the support of the South African President, Thabo Mbeki, the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. Australia, South Africa and Nigeria are mandated to review the Commonwealth's suspension of Zimbabwe.
