Refrain from rhetoric, U.S. tells India, Pak.

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington Feb. 11. The United States has asked India and Pakistan to refrain from actions and rhetoric that contribute to rising tensions, and called for a dialogue to settle differences between the two nations.

On the "latest burp" in tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, the State Department spokesman, Richard Boucher, said on Monday that the two countries had the "sovereign" right to determine which diplomats of the other states might be accredited to them.

"However, tensions between India and Pakistan remain high. We continue to believe that both countries should restrain rhetoric and actions that heighten them."

The only way the differences could be resolved is through dialogue.
