State-level CAs' conference from Saturday

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE FEB. 11 . Like most groups of professionals, chartered accountants (CAs) keep themselves abreast of the developments in their sector, and learn to use new tools that make delivery of services better.

The Karnataka State Chartered Accountants' Association (KSCA) is organising the 15th annual State-level conference on the theme, `Empowerment for excellence' on February 15 and 16.

The KSCAA President, H.B.M.Murugesh, said the conference provided an opportunity for interaction within the fraternity, and also acted as an outreach event that covered industry, commerce, government agencies, and any section of society that needed to engage with CAs.

The KSCAA was set up in 1957, and today, with over 1,600 members, is rated the second best association of professional CAs in the country, after Mumbai.

There are several reasons for this, according to Mr. Murugesh.

The association, along with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) which is the regulatory body for CAs, has always worked in tandem with the Government and other agencies, to bring the benefits of best practices, and expertise to service delivery in audit and accountancy.

Recently, a study group on internal audit was set up, and the result was an industry-specific manual on the subject, that various industries could use.

The CAs are also up-to-date in the use of management information systems (MIS), and in Karnataka, as everywhere else in the country, it has been mandatory for professionals to equip themselves with the tools of technology and be techno-savvy before setting up shop.

It is also a matter of great satisfaction to CAs from Bangalore that the most popular and widely used accounting software comes from the stable of Tally, a Bangalore-based software solutions firm, which is sponsoring the forthcoming conference, says Mr. Murugesh.

Taking the KSCAA's pro bono approach a step further, the association has undertaken to empanel auditors for the Karnataka Souhardha Cooperatives Ltd. This would be done free of cost, Mr. Murugesh said.

Its engagement with the Government to bring out a user-friendly manual on Value Added Tax (VAT) was also a pro bono initiative in the interest of the public and all those who will be affected.

The association also plans to set up a centre for excellence for auditing and accounting studies, knowledge sharing, and community building.

At the seminar, for which a Halebeedu sculpture depicting Arjuna poised to shoot an arrow at his target has been chosen as the mascot, experts will address technical sessions on a gamut of issues currently engaging the profession worldwide.

There will be a session to deliberate on the post-Enron scenario, and experts will share knowledge on anti-dumping law, VAT, developments in accounting, and business process outsourcing implications.

Needless to say, each delegate would be given a liberal kit of books of professional interest and CDs, and exposed to the range of products useful to them, Mr. Murugesh added.
