Karnataka
By Our Special Correspondent
He told presspersons that the matter would be placed before the Cabinet and also made known to the people at large. This was being thought of as the weaker sections did not have access to loans. Mr. Vishwanath said he had directed the department officials to recover loans from chronic defaulters by staging dharna in front of their residences. He said that nearly Rs. 260 crore was due to the Karnataka Central Cooperative Bank in Gadag and most of the dues were from textile and oil mills owned by politicians. He said he would also join in the dharna, if necessary. On the waiver of interest on cooperative loans to farmers, Mr. Vishwanath said it was from March 1, 2002 to September 30, 2002. The sum came to Rs. 127 crore, and while the Centre gave a grant of 20 per cent, the rest had to be borne by the State.
