The police arrested 25 persons in Nagpur for their alleged involvement in running a cricket-betting racket for the World Cup in South Africa.

The crime branch sleuths conducted simultaneous raids at five places in different parts in the city where betting for the New Zealand-Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe-Namibia matches was in progress.

The bookies were accepting bets on mobile phones and the amount may run into several lakhs of rupees. The police were keeping a vigil on the activities of some suspected persons involved in the betting racket in the busy commercial areas in city.

The police also recovered stationary, CTVs and four mobile handsets from them.

Offences under section 4 and 5 of Gambling Act have been registered against them, Kangale added.

On Monday 10 people were arrested in Bhopal by the city police on charges of betting. The police also recovered a total of Rs 2.3 lakhs from them. Eight cellphones, one cordless phone, a tape recorder and a television set were also recovered from the arrested persons.
