Seeking divine intervention

A day before India begins its campaign, a yagna to seek divine blessings was performed by cricket enthusiasts with much fanfare near the historic Kalighat Temple in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Cricket bats, placed near a large replica of the World Cup, were worshipped as priests offered flowers to a portrait of skipper Sourav Ganguly for his success in leading the team to the final.

A flock of homing pigeons, with good luck messages tied to their feet, were also released.

Fans in Kalighat perhaps took their cue from skipper Sourav's brother Snehashis, who performed the rituals on Sunday.

Cricket aficionados and school students also put up a giant cricket bat at the Hazra crossing in South Kolkata.

Citizens were asked to sign on the 25-foot long bat to express solidarity with the national side set to begin its campaign against Holland on Wednesday.
