Forest guard killed

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR FEB. 11. The Orissa Government's efforts to check illegal fishing by mechanised trawlers along the State's coast to protect the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles has suffered a setback with the trawler operators killing a forest guard near Babubali island in Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary area.

The forest guard, Shyam Singh, was allegedly thrown into the sea by a group of trawler operators on Sunday night and the body was recovered from the shore on Monday afternoon.

Shyam Singh and two other forest guards, Sankarshan Lenka and Bamdev Pradhan, were guarding two fishing trawlers seized on Sunday along with 13 operators who were also detained.

Later, the operators sped away in the trawlers, gagging Lenka and Pradhan and pushed Shyam Singh into the sea. Lenka and Pradhan were found alive by forest officials on Monday.
