Call to tackle cattle menace

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JAN. 6. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi today expressed deep concern over the menace of stray cattle, monkeys and dogs plaguing the Capital and called for formulation of a comprehensive policy to deal with the situation.

The Leader of the Opposition in the House, Subhash Arya, said so many meetings had been held so far in this connection but nothing concrete had been achieved.

"People have been facing various problems as incidents of accidents by stray cattle and attack by stray dogs and monkeys had been going up.''

Assuring the House that the matter was being discussed on a priority basis, the Leader of the House, Ram Babu Sharma, said the Corporation could sanction more budget to tackle the problem and even the councillors were ready to pay at least Rs.25 lakhs each so that there was no dearth of money.

Stating that without social awareness and public participation the issue could not be resolved, Mr. Sharma said a high-level committee would be soon set up which, in consultation with the councillors and experts, would formulate a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem of stray cattle and dogs.

Meanwhile, the House today passed a resolution giving its sanction for privatisation of the toll tax collection.

However, the Congress councillor, Farhad Suri, pointed out that in the previous year, the MCD had put a target of collecting Rs.100 crores from toll tax, but surprisingly it had kept Rs.65 crores as reserved price for tenders which should had been at least the target which it had fixed for itself. This would bring monetary loss the Corporation, he added.

Mr. Sharma said the project was on the trail basis and so money for tender could always be increased from next year onwards. The new proposal would be in the Corporation's interests, he added.
