At a rally organised by the Trinamool Congress at the Brigade Parade Grounds here, Mr. Fernandes said: "I know that the people have expectations from the Centre and the Prime Minister is also aware of it". Later, when asked by presspersons, he declined comment on Ms. Banerjee's inclusion in the Union Cabinet. At the meeting, Mr. Fernandes' remarks acknowledging Ms. Banerjee's popularity and her ability to organise such a huge rally drew applause. Tableaux depicting "police atrocities" on lawyers and doctors and the acute financial crisis faced by the State under the prolonged Left Front rule were on display. Commenting on the long spell of Left rule in the State, Mr. Fernandes said that after many years the former Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu, and the present incumbent, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, had admitted that the policies pursued by the Government prevented industrialists from investing in the State.
