Cong. in favour of Ram temple: Digvijay

Jabalpur Jan. 6. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, today said that the Congress favoured construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya, but not at the cost of destroying other places of worship or hurting the feelings of any community.

"The mandir issue is sub judice and if the Vishwa Hindu Parishad general secretary, Praveen Togadia, wants to make any comment or argument over the matter, the court concerned is the appropriate forum," Mr. Singh told presspersons here.

Reacting to reports that quoted Mr. Togadia seeking the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's support for constructing the temple at the disputed site, Mr. Singh said Ms. Gandhi would respond to the VHP leader's statement. He asserted that the Congress stand on the issue was clear and that the matter would be settled with the consent of all parties.

On the Ujjain controversy, Mr. Singh said that the land adjoining the world-renowned Mahakaleshwar temple belonged to the State Government, as per revenue records.

If the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh claimed possession on the basis of a 1931 document, the Government would verify the matter and take back the land in the public interest, Mr. Singh warned. — UNI
