Tamil Nadu
By Our Staff Reporter
The news items pertained to the `gruel clash in Madurai', the transfer of the then Chief Secretary, Sukavaneswar, and a report on the controversial child burial ritual at a temple near Madurai. Already the daily faces one defamation case, also filed by the State Government, for its report on the alleged assault on a policeman, Manivannan, who has been trying to get recognition for the police constabulary association. The Editor and publisher, D. Palraj, appeared in the principal sessions court today. The judge dispensed with his further appearance. He also exempted the former Chennai Mayor, M.K. Stalin, from appearing in court in connection with the `gruel clash case' where he had also been cited as an accused. In his petitions, the city public prosecutor contended that the reports had been published without ascertaining the truth and they in effect defamed the reputation of the Tamil Nadu Government as well as the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa.
According to him, the reports constituted an offence under Section 499 of IPC and were punishable under Section 500 of IPC. The judge posted the matter to February 17 for further hearing.
