Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporterr
A spokesperson of the Welfare Association of the Private Milk Producers and Distributors, R. Krishnan, said in a communication today the members had extended full cooperation to the municipality for its drive and ensured that no animal was let to move about in traffic-dense pockets in and around Pondicherry. The animals were unleashed to graze in areas outside traffic points. But the municipal staff resorted to lifting even these animals and impounded them, defeating the spirit of the ban on the movement of animals, he alleged. The owners were levied Rs.50 a day per animal impounded to meet the expenditure to feed it. A penalty of Rs.100 was also imposed.Mr. Krishnan said that some 20 days ago, a cow grazing in the Krishna Nagar area was lifted by the authorities and the animal sustained bleeding injuries when it was forced to get in to the vehicle. No medical attention was given nor the impounded animal taken care of, keeping it without food for 20 days. The owner was abused when he questioned the inhuman treatment meted out to his animal.
