Anbalagan urges CM to tone up sports activities

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Jan. 6 . The AIADMK legislator, A. Anbalagan, urged the Chief Minister to tone up sports activities in the Union Territory of Pondicherry to help talented sportspersons achieve success.

In a communication here today, Mr. Anbalagan said although copious funds were being spent including the one for the current national sports festival for women, the Administration had been funding only 17 out of 27 disciplines of sports and games. It was regrettable that no sports association was able to participate in the recent sports events in Hyderabad. He attributed this to lack of understanding between the Chairman of the Sports Council and officials here. Those interested had participated spending from their own pockets.

Although an Olympic Sports Committee had been set up, no sports association could gear itself, and the committee itself was not able to function. He appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and suggested that the responsibility assigned to the Education Minister to function as ex-officio Chairman of the Sports Council only added to his heavy workload. Hence, the Chairman post should be looked after by some other person and the post of the council member-secretary be handled by those interested in sports activities.

Proficient sportspersons should be given jobs as an encouragement.
