According to reports reaching here, Mr. Patel, who was in his car, was shot at from a close range. He died on the spot.

Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad, the offices of the municipal commissioner and the party offices of the Congress and the BJP were ransacked.

A section of the Dalit employees belonging to the Congress-controlled municipal corporation had been agitating for the last few days demanding conversion of daily wagers, working as `safai kamdars' and doing other menial jobs, as permanent staff of the civic body.
