While farmers from the downstream of the 33rd km. of the canal squatted in the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner demanding release of water for the summer crops and cattle, those from Gondichatnahalli and Melinahanasawadi "locked'' the Divisional Office of the Irrigation Department, asking the authorities concerned to conserve water for the summer crops. The farmers demonstrating at the Deputy Commissioner's office suggested that the available water be utilised scientifically till the tail-end of the canal to ensure that there was no paucity of water for drinking purposes as well as the summer crops. They termed the schedule prepared by the authorities for the release of water unscientific. On account of drought, borewells and other sources of water had dried up. This demonstration was led by the General Secretary of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, H.R. Basavarajappa. The other groups of farmers demanded that water in the Tunga Reservoir at Gajanur be conserved for the summer crops by constructing a temporary barrage with the help of sandbags. They also suggested that the silt deposited in the canal be removed.
