East's chase drifted into the woods as S.S. Das dragged Amit Bhandari on to his stumps in the very first over and two deliveries later M.S. Dhoni snicked Amit Unyal. The openers had left with just eight on the board and despite Debang Gandhi's cameo (36, 28b, 6x4), East's chase ebbed away as lack of effective partnerships strangled the innings. Debang Gandhi was stumped by Ajay Ratra off Sarandeep with East's score reading 57 for three. Skipper Rohan Gavaskar (29) along with Prabhanjan Mallick (22) and Subhomoy Das (42) failed to cash in on their starts. Mallick provided the lone thrust in the middle overs, hoisting Sarandeep twice over the ropes but North skipper Reetinder Singh Sodhi trapped him leg before when he tried to whip one past square-leg. Amit Mishra, from the BEML end, bowled a good length and with the East batsmen remaining tentative in their footwork, his job was rendered easy. Earlier, North trundled on and though opener Gautam Gambhir (23) failed to beat an S.S. Das' throw from square-leg, his partner Akash Chopra (60, 95b, 5x4) held firm and guided the innings past the 100-run mark. Akash was however castled by left-arm spinner Rohan Gavaskar (two for 46), who bowled a steady line. North inched past the 200 mark as Mithun Minhas (77 n.o., 92b, 3x4) held the innings together before the overs ran out. Minhas played a `wait and watch' game and used his feet only in the slog overs, despatching Rohan past covers. North's 238 for five did appear meagre especially after Sunday's high-scoring game between the West and South Zones. But its spinners delivered the knock-out punch. North has five points from one match while East has five from two outings. East will clash with South at Visakhapatnam on January 9 while North will face-off against Central at Goa on the same day.
