Deepan, Poobesh and Siddarth share lead

By Manuel Aaron

Chennai Jan. 6. International Master Deepan Chakravarthi, S. Poobesh Anand (Loyola College, Chennai) and R. Siddarth of Velammal School shared the lead with four points each when the fourth round of Chess Mate's Dr Mahalingam Sathabishekam FIDE-rated Open chess tournament concluded here on Monday at the Hall of Chess in Nehru Stadium. Five more rounds remain in this 9-round Swiss system tournament for 187 players and a prize fund of Rs 51,000.

On the top board, Deepan Chakravarthi was surprised by the 26th move of the Railway's veteran A. Sankar who offered an unacceptable rook with the black pieces. However, Deepan kept his cool and slowly built up a decisive counter-attack on the black king. When he sacrificed a knight on the 30th move, black was already lost. The game lasted 34 moves.

Poobesh Anand's game against T.J. Suresh Kumar (36 moves) was completely tactical with Poobesh always offering some material or the other to Suresh who was playing the white pieces. A nice interception tactic finally won a rook for bishop and the game on the 36th turn.
