A high-profile pat for villagers who stood up to naxals

By Our Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD JAN. 6. Within 48 hours of naxals thwarting the Janmabhoomi grama sabha in interior and naxalite-affected Maddikunta in Machareddy mandal and subsequently facing the wrath of womenfolk, the district administration and the police made a beeline to the village on Monday to hold the gram sabha and compliment villagers.

The visit of the District Collector, G.Asok Kumar and the Superintendent of police, Shanka Brata Bagchi, came as a surprise to the villagers, who had not anticipated their presence. The meeting also saw the maiden appearance of the Kamareddy MLA and Government Whip, Syed Yusuf Ali in the village, who had not even visited the village once leave alone during the election campaign.

Today's high profile visit by the district officials was more to boost the morale of the villagers for their dare devil act in confronting the naxals and pulling them up for the violent acts. The administration tried to gain mileage out of the incident and announced sops to the village. Even today Maddikunta is said to be the hub of PW activity in Kamareddy sub-division.

The village had past history of openly supporting naxals and facing the wrath of the police time and again. The village was in news again a few months ago when the PW naxals conducted famine raid and distributed the rice to the villagers. This time also the villagers faced tough time from the police. The SP who visited the village in wake of the famine raid had to return in a haste after the locals protested against the police presence. But, the Saturday's incident changed the attitude of the villagers towards the naxals.

It may be mentioned here that two armed naxals came to the gram sabha meeting on Saturday and threatened the nodal team to leave the village within five minutes. The nodal team retreated from the village in a hurry. The women at the gram sabha had gathered in anticipation of sops from the Government were upset at the disruption. The women then turned their ire at the two underground naxals and gheraoed them. The duo was pulled up for preventing the villagers from getting the benefits from the Government.

In this background, the administration and police thought it fit to visit the village and interact with them. The administration organised the gram sabha on the ZP secondary school premises. The villagers took the maximum advantage of the meeting by airing their grievances. The villagers were forthright in their talk and blamed the backwardness of the village on naxalism. They also lamented that the administration and the elected representatives had neglected the village because it was in the grip of the naxals.

The villagers demanded solution to the drinking water crisis, installation of telephone facility, resuming the RTC bus service, repairs to the irrigation tank constructed by the VSS, construction of a new percolation tank and flushing and installation of pipes to the 10 hand borewells in the village. The village youth club demanded sports kit.

The Collector announced that he would take up the works in a phased manner. He said 4,000 Individual Sanitary Latrines had been constructed in the mandal of which 65 were taken up in the village. He assured to release rice and the amount due for the ISL works. The DWCRA group leader, Laxmi, complained that the anganwadi workers were not paying attention to the children.

The SP congratulated the womenfolk for taking on the naxals. He hoped that the villagers would be united in throwing out the naxals. The Kanareddy MLA also made full use of the opportunity and promised all help to the villagers.
