Weightlifting
By Our Special Correspondent
To S. Elangovan went the honour of eclipsing the first National record in the 56 kg category when he broke the clean and jerk mark of 131 kg which was held by Tamil Nadu's G. Munivel since 1999 by lifting 132.5 kg. That was the only National mark established on the opening day. Elangovan was the best in the snatch with a 100 kg lift and in the process took the gold in the total weight also. His team-mate, V. Kumar was placed second. In the 62 kg category, the two Vellore boys, K. Anbu Kathiravan and K. Sathishkumar held sway. Anbu came tops in the clean and jerk with a lift of 140 kg, five kgs more than Sathish. That helped him more than compensate for his second place to the latter in the snatch event. Actually all three lifters had lifted an identical 110 kg in snatch but Satish took the gold on lesser body weight. Anbu had to settle for silver with Deepak Gautam taking bronze. Anbu's good effort in the clean and jerk helped him take the gold in the total lift also with Satish coming next best. A feature of this year's event is the stress on dope testing with SAI coming into the picture to help the organisers at the instance of the Weightlifting Federation of India. Two doctors from Bangalore SAI, Dr. Jayaprakash and Dr. Sarala have arrived to coordinate with the local SAI officials to collect urine samples of the winners and also those randomly picked. The samples are sealed and sent to Delhi for tests. Earlier the championship was inaugurated by Mr. B. Sivanthi Adityan, president Tamil Nadu Olympic Association and Patron-in-chief of Tamil Nadu Weightlifting Association. The results: men: 56 kg: snatch: 1. S. Elangovan (TN) 100 kg; 2. V.
