Minister lauds police

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR JAN. 6. G.Parameshwar, Minister for Higher Education, has commended the State police for their role in the operations to nab the forest brigand, Veerappan.

Inaugurating the District Police Annual Sports Meet at the New Parade Ground here on Monday, Dr. Parameshwar, who is the minister in-charge of Tumkur District, said: "Our police are working at it (catching Veerappan) very honestly. Their performance is admirable. The Government knows it well, and is providing the police every encouragement." However, Dr. Parameshwar regretted that the Opposition parties were trying to paint a gloomy picture to earn political mileage from the matter. They should refrain from issuing statements that disheartened the police.

Rejecting the demand for a CBI probe into the death of the former minister, H.Nagappa, Dr. Parameshwar said the police had solved many complex inter-State in the past. They would certainly find out who killed Nagappa. He said the Government spent Rs. 500 crore in three years on modernising the police force, and accorded priority to the welfare of policemen. About 5,000 houses were built for them, and 1,500 new vehicles were procured. Steps had been taken to link the functioning of all police stations to a network. The Superintendent of Police, R.Hitendra, who welcomed the gathering, sought Rs. 35 lakh from the Government to complete the Rs. one-crore District Police Office building, which was in the final stage of construction.

The sport meet will conclude on Tuesday evening. S.Mariswamy, Additional Director-General of Police, and K.V.Ravindranath Tagore, Inspector-General of Police (Central Range), are likely to participate in the closing ceremony.
