Letters to the Editor
Sir, The two articles on Rajaji (Sunday Magazine, December 22) were refreshing. Gopal Gandhi has given a reverential tribute to his grandfather in portraying the `inner being' of Rajaji. With nostalgia, Ramachandra Guha has given a splendid profile of Rajaji's multifaceted personality. Especially for the fringe of the aged readers like me who knew Rajaji and M.S. Subbulakshmi personally these articles were very moving with a personal touch. The song "Kurai Onrum Illai, Kanna" is an echo of the Alwars' Bhakti movement. To Rajaji, MS was his proud, brilliant and beloved daughter. In this song the filial bond of MS-Rajaji is divinised with Periyalwar and Andal.
R. Varadarajan,
Sir, Recalling the greatness of Rajaji your articles on this towering personality were unique. Rajaji had his own strong views on matters varying from BCG vaccines to sales tax, rationing and prohibition. More often than not his views ultimately succeeded as well. Humour and diplomacy were also combined with his actions and utterances.
M. Radhakrishnan,
